Why does SOLIDWORKS PDM crash when adding or combining PDF files from a Windows Explorer vault view using Adobe Acrobat Pro?

 Problem

When Adobe Acrobat Pro is installed the default is that the "Make Adobe Acrobat my default PDF viewer" tick box is selected. If this box is NOT ticked, the crash does NOT happen because Adobe Reader is still used in the SOLIDWORKS PDM vault preview when the 'add files' dialog box is displayed.

 Solution

To resolve the issue when Adobe Acrobat Pro has already been installed, you should change the default PDF viewer back to Adobe Reader (or anything other than Adobe Acrobat Pro ):

  1. Run Adobe Acrobat Pro

  2. Select Edit-Preferences

  3. Choose the General category

  4. Click the 'Select Default PDF Handler' button

  5. Choose an application other than 'Adobe Acrobat Pro' in the drop down (normally Adobe Reader)

  6. Click Apply, then click OK.
(See the attached screen shot 'Adobe Acrobat Pro Setup.jpg')

Now when adding/inserting/opening/combining a file from a vault from within 'Adobe Acrobat Pro' with the SOLIDWORKS PDM Preview tab selected, there is no crash.

A possible disadvantage after this change is that when a file is doubled clicked in Windows Explorer (inside the vault or outside the vault) Adobe Reader will display the file. Some might consider this an advantage since the use of Adobe Acrobat Pro to edit a file is a deliberate action via the right mouse button menu or running the application directly.
