EN:SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard - Upgrade Server

Please check that the installed SQL and server Operating System are compatible with the new version of PDM that you are upgrading to. Furthermore, the archive server and database backups have been performed.

SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager

It is important to run installations and upgrades with theĀ SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager. Why? The SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager will check for prerequisites and install them as needed. Failure to use the SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager may result in PDM not working, as the required prerequisites have not been installed.Ā

If you have already completed the upgrade and discovered that PDM is not working, and you didĀ notĀ use SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager, then run all the installs for all the prerequisites under the folder "PreReqs", located at the root of the installation file set folder.

Run SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager

At the root of the installation folder, run "setup.exe".

At the top of the dialog, verify it is theĀ SOLIDWORKSĀ [version] Installation Manager.Ā

SelectĀ Install server componentsĀ and thenĀ Upgrade SOLIDWORKS PDM ServerĀ versionĀ on this computer.Ā

SelectĀ NextĀ at the bottom of the dialog box.

SelectĀ Change.Ā

Note that theĀ SQL ServerĀ showsĀ Configuration Required.

Verify thatĀ SOLIDWORKS PDM StandardĀ is selected.Ā

Accept default installation location.Ā

Select features that are installed on this server. Install the client for troubleshooting.Ā

For SQL server, always specify theĀ server name. SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional typically uses the default SQL instance.Ā Ā

image-20250611-062303.png

Never useĀ ā€œlocal\instance nameā€ as the clients cannot resolve this name.Ā

Scroll down to finish specifying the SQL information.Ā

This is an upgrade, so the database already exists. SelectĀ Use an existing SQL Server Express Database.Ā

Enter the credentials for PDM to use when accessing the database.Ā

SelectĀ Back to SummaryĀ to return to the previous screen.Ā

image-20250611-062334.png

Note: While ā€œsaā€ is the default SQL account, it is possible that a different account has been specified for security purposes. Use this section verify the SQL account used for PDM to verify the account.

Note theĀ SQL ServerĀ now lists the SQL instance.

Accept theĀ SOLIDWORKSĀ terms, then clickĀ Install Now.

YouĀ mustĀ upgrade your vault databases.Ā

Verify the SQL Account Used for PDM

Open theĀ SOLIDWORKS PDM Archive Server Configuration ToolĀ on the archive server.Ā

Go toĀ ToolsĀ >Ā Default Settings…

image-20250611-061909.png

In theĀ Default SettingsĀ dialog, selectĀ Login.Ā

UnderĀ SQL login,Ā selectĀ Change.

image-20250611-061926.png

DO NOTĀ change theĀ SQL user loginĀ account in theĀ Change SQL User LoginĀ dialog box.Ā Ā

SelectĀ Cancel,Ā as we don’t want to change anything.Ā

image-20250611-061950.png

Now, we need to verify your vault is using the default SQL login.

Right-click your vault in theĀ SOLIDWORKS Archive Server Configuration ManagerĀ and selectĀ Properties.

image-20250611-062008.png

In theĀ PropertiesĀ dialog box, select theĀ LoginĀ tab.Ā

See if the boxĀ Use default SQL loginĀ is checked. If it isn’t, selectĀ ChangeĀ to see what account is being used for this vault.Ā

SelectĀ OKĀ orĀ CancelĀ to exit the dialog.

image-20250611-062028.png

Note: It is recommended that all vaults use the default SQL login. All vaults that connect to the same SQL install must have the same SQL login credentials.
