Tutorial on viscoelastic material modelling in BRIGADE/Plus

Tutorial on viscoelastic material modelling in BRIGADE/Plus

Overview

In this tutorial, viscoelastic material parameters are calibrated to match the time-dependent concrete creep factor expressed in EN 1992-1-1:2005 Appendix B. This creep factor is not a true material parameter in the sense that it also depends on the geometry of the structure; thinner concrete sections experience more creep due to faster drying compared to thicker ones. Therefore, we need to take geometry into account when defining the material model. The following geometry is studied in the tutorial:

The material parameters from EN 1992-1-1:2005 Appendix B are listed in the attached excel sheet and recalculated to material parameters used for the viscoelastic material model used in BRIGADE.

In the end the created material model is verified by comparing its behavior under load with the material curve received from the equations in EN 1992-1-1:2005 Appendix B.

Reference

For more theory on viscoelasticity, see the Abaqus Theory Guide under Mechanical Constitutive Theories (included in the BRIGADE/Plus installation).

Limitations

The material model can only be used in BRIGADE/Plus, not BRIGADE/Standard.

Conclusion

In BRIGADE/Plus it is possible to set up viscoelastic material parameters to match the time-dependent concrete creep factor expressed in EN 1992-1-1:2005 Appendix B.
